What to do when all of your gear is stolen from your car in #TheDistrict

So last night I left my car parked on the street in Columbia Heights. It's a stupid move, of course, and being too trusting I left my friggin' fancy-ass Chrome bag on the back seat. Fast forward to this morning where we discovered that - gasp - some jerk smashed the left rear window and swiped my computer, ipad, and a variety of other toys. They then threw my external hard drive - in pieces - on the ground near by and had a sort of 'cord party' distributing same all over the neighbors' yards.

My car - and all my phone chargers - are currently a crime scene, which necessarily inhibits my charging of my last remaining electronic device, my Blackberry. I have stolen my host's laptop, and am watching Ghostbusters while awaiting the arrival of the crime scene investigators, who are apparently going to fingerprint my car and all of the bits and pieces of electronica strewn around. Then I get to go to some random repair shop and pay an unexpected number of dollars to get the car window replaced. I'm really excited.

But more to the point, I've been playing phone tag with Apple. Endless phone tag. They say they can't turn on MobileMe remotely - even though I'm willing to pay for them to do so. And because of that - even though the 3G services are on - the cops can't track down my iPad. And because the cops can't track down my iPad, I'm stuck wondering what the hell I'm supposed to do. I've had it for one week, approximately. We spent last weekend using its magical GPS to figure out where we were, get to new places, and spend 12 hours in a car without stopping; editing social media, managing urgent bits of information from the office...

So then I tried AT&T, thinking hey, they manage my data plan - they can turn it on/off and sideways, or hypothetically, you know, find the damn thing. They can't. We're working on 'why' they can't... but for fuck's sake.

More to come.
